The Ohio State University football team has played in the last two Division 1 National Championship games, so we know they are good. The thing is that Ohio State lost the last two Division 1 College National Championship games.
For Ohio State to beat there opponent up during the regular season, like they did today, is not news. It is expected. Today I learned today about Ohio State’s 2008 team slogan: The Fierce Urgency of Now.
The slogan is taken form Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream Speech.” In terms of quotes from that famous speech, The Fierce Urgency of Now has clearly taken a back seat to the “I have a dream,” quote. (Read the enitre speech here.) (Watch the entire speech here.)
To attempt to compare a football team’s season to the struggle that Dr. King led for equal rights for all is not a fair or even a real comparison. Football, as entertaining and fun as it is, simply doesn’t matter in our day to day lives, even though we do our best to give the game so much importance.
But the quote The Fierce Urgency of Now deserves attention.
I believe God was talking through His messenger Dr. King when he spoke the words “The Fierce Urgency of Now.” I believe God was speaking to His people through Dr. King telling us to get it together.
Jesus spoke about the need for UNITY. Matthew 12:25
Dr. King echoed Jesus.
God spoke about righteousness and justice. Psalms 97:1-2
Dr. King spoke boldly about justice and righteousness.
What have you been putting off that God has called you to take care of? What is in your life that requires The Fierce Urgency of Now?

The Urgency of Now becomes more and more “important ” as we age. God bless you for realizing how important (and writing about it) at such a “young” age. How old was Dr. King when he delivered the speech?
