Santee, South Carolina has a website at saneteetourism.com. The website boasts that Santee is “America’s Value Golf Destination.”
Reading a little further on the home page,
While there are just three golf courses in this town of less than 800 people, the trinity has become sacred ground for the more than 150,000 golfers who make the annual pilgrimage here to play what many consider the “best value in golf” in North America. For those of you who like to play a different course every day, there are another dozen or so courses to choose from within 40 minutes of Santee.
While you may have heard of Santee, South Carolina and its great golf courses (all three of them), I ask you: Have you ever heard of Orlando, Florida?
Matt, a friend I work with, explained to me that he remembered when he was growing up in Orangeburg, SC he heard that Walt Disney originally wanted to build Disney World in Santee, SC. Despite Mr. Disney’s sales pitch and vision for his Mickey Mouse theme park, he could not convince the powers to be of Santee and South Carolina that Disney World would be a good thing. To those South Carolina leaders I guess the future being “known” as “America’s Value Golf Destination” was much more appealing than to be the home of Walt Disney World.
Orlando, Florida took a risk in embracing Walt Disney and his vision. Orlando took a risk that Santee wasn’t ready nor willing to take.
Obviously in retrospect any area in South Carolina, if not the entire United States, would love to go back 50 years and beg Mr. Disney to come and plant his dream park in their community, but so is life… or is it?
Has God placed something before you that seems too crazy? Something that just doesn’t make sense in your current situation? Something that has maybe a 50/50 chance of working or maybe even 40/60 or 30/70?
Is God asking you to embrace Him and take a step in faith even though you are not quite sure of the footing?
or…
you can be like Santee, South Carolina wondering might have been if only…???
