With the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 beginning, with Democrats and Republicans seemingly at war with each other, with marriages failing at disgusting rates, with companies closing all over the world, with charitable donations weakening at an unprecedented rate, a question has been rolling through my mind:
How important is teamwork?
Jesus had something to say about teamwork. Mark 3:24-25
There is power in teamwork.
Read that sentence again…
When a team assembles to work together toward a common goal, it is unbelievable what that team can accomplish.
- Basketball teams without “super-stars” can destroy “super-star” led teams
- Dirty politics cease to exist (remember the day after 9/11)
- Marriages blossom when husband and wife seek God and each other
- Companies profit when leadership and staff work together
- Charities flourish when the mission is the focus
When a team comes together and works together in unison, in one accord, nothing is impossible. Genesis 11:6.
Michael Jordan, pretty much the unquestioned best basketball player ever, was unbeliavably successful. It took him 7 years to win his first NBA Title. After 7 years, Jordan explained, he realized no matter how good he was, he couldn’t do it on his own. He shifted his focus from making sure he was the star to being the ultimate team player.
John Elway took the Denver Broncos to 6 Super Bowls. He lost the first 4. He won the last 2. He explained that he learned he couldn’t win it all by himself.
Ray Croc, founder of McDonald’s, went bankrupt 3 times. He founded McDonald’s when he was in his 50′s. He explained he needed to trust people to run with his ideas. With McDonald’s he did, and he never went backrupt again.
There are thousands of Michael Jordan, John Elway, Ray Croc stories out there. Maybe not as well known, but they are out there.
Do you have a team around you that you trust and they trust you? Are you working together toward a common goal. Are you all advancing one vision?
I am not there yet. I am seeing my team come together. I would put everything I am (including my wife and son) in the hands of some of my fellow teammates, however there are some other teammates that I love dearly, that I don’t have that level of trust with… yet.
In business, in sport, in marriage, in family, in friendship, in ministry are you there yet?
